Resilient bars used to decouple plasterboard from stud walls and beneath timber joists to improve the soundproofing of walls and ceilings available from

Sound Service (Oxford) Ltd.

OVERVIEW

A thin shaped steel channel designed to decouple acoustic plasterboard from timber stud walls and beneath ceiling joists.  Using the Resilient Bar system to isolate plasterboard from the structure improves the soundproofing because the design of the bar effectively absorbs vibration through the structure thereby reducing the level of sound that would otherwise be heard.

Benefits

  • Will reduce noise through walls and ceilings.
  • Can help meet PART E
  • Easily cut using tin snips or Gilbows
  • Lightweight
  • Available in 3m lengths

TESTIMONIAL

“If you’re soundproofing a ceiling you need this. Really cuts down impact noise from upstairs. Has really helped us cope with living under noisy neighbours.”                                                                                                                         James Clark

DESCRIPTION

CEILINGS

09 Resilient R2 small1 Resilient Bar

Our Resilient Bars should be used as part of any soundproofing upgrade of ceilings to reduce structure borne vibration that allows noise through.  Can be used as part of any system to meet Part E for the control of noise through ceilings.

Used along with 30mm of acoustic plasterboard, Resilient Bars because of their ability to significantly reduce noise and vibration through a ceiling, are a popular choice for installers working to a limited budget and looking for a cheap solution to soundproof a ceiling.   If it is not possible to fix the Resilient Bars directly to the underside of joists then they can be supported by 50mm battens screwed through existing ceilings.   (See installation instructions link near top of page).

Using the Resilient Bar system of decoupling ceilings will usually improve the sound insulation of a ceiling by about 11dB but when combined with our Acoustic Mineral Wool between the joists and a double layer of 15mm Acoustic Plasterboard the soundproofing would increase to about 16dB which is a significant improvement in sound loss through a treated ceiling.

If the 50mm batten system is used, the battens must have as a loose insert between them our 50mm AMW50 acoustic mineral wool secured with wire netting or our superior SoundBlocker Acoustic Quilt that should be fixed between the battens before fixing the Resilient Bars.

If the batten system is used beneath existing ceilings with the mineral wool infill, Resilient Bars and 30mm of acoustic plasterboard, airborne and impact noise will be reduced in excess of 300% and can be further enhanced if our SoundBlocker Membrane is sandwiched between the layers of plasterboard.

WALLS

More information on sound proofing a wall can be viewed here.

Resilient Bars are a vibration absorbing fixing that can always be used to improve the sound insulation of walls when used along with acoustic mineral wool or SoundBlocker Quilt and is the one of the best solutions when noise is a problem from the other side of the wall.

For best results, as always, is to install an independent soundproofed stud wall at least 25mm away from the wall that is to be upgraded.  However, is space does not permit this method of noise control then battens of at least 50mm depth should be screwed to the wall and loosely infilled between with the correct density acoustic mineral wool.  Resilient bars can then be screwed across the battens from floor to ceiling at the spacings detailed in the application instructions with 30mm (2 x 15mm) acoustic plasterboard screwed to the bars using our easy to use self-drilling screws.

For an enhanced acoustic performance, sandwich our 2mm SBM5 between the layers of plasterboard which breaks up the mass of the plasterboard with a layer of much higher mass that gives even better sound proofing results for the finished wall.
